Japan's Surrender

JapanKing Hirohito

In the summer of 1944, the US Army occupied Mariana Island, and started
air raids on the mainland of Japan with B-29 bombers from November. By
the air raid on Tokyo of March 10, 1945, the death toll recorded about
80,000 due to the damage of residential areas. The US Army took over the
Io Island after one month's severe battle in February, and they landed
on Okinawa and exterminated Japan Army in April, 1945.
The Cabinet of Sekigantaro, that was formed on April 7, 1945, cried out
for fighting against US Army while held secret meeting with Soviet Union
to mediate a settlement of war that results in no progress.
On July 26, 1945 USA-UK-China announced a settlement policy for Japan by
the Postdam Declaration and forced Japan to surrender without any
conditions. Japan's disregard of this demand caused US Army's atomic
bombing in Hiroshima on August 6 and in Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 that
results in the death toll about 340,000.
Soviet Union at last declared war against Japan on August 8, 1945 and
pushed forward to Manchuria. Japan accepted the Postsdam Declaration on
15 August, and Japanese King released the surrender documents on 15
August, 1945.
As soon as the Japan's surrender, McArther, the supreme commander of the
allied force, assigned the Japan's occupied territory to Soviet Union,
Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, the upper part of 38 latitude of Korean
peninsula, and south Sakhalin. Stalin was stubborn to take the northern
Hokaido, but Truman, the President of USA, refused his request. This
means that Soviet Union was excluded from the station of mainland of
Japan.
